Our Commitment to Climate and Sustainability

At Woodbury Salterton CofE Primary School, we believe that climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing our world today. We are committed to preparing our students to be informed, responsible, and active citizens who understand the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Working in partnership with our pupils, the Trust, and the wider community, we are taking meaningful steps to reduce our environmental impact and build a more sustainable future. Our current focus includes:

  • Decarbonisation and Energy Efficiency: We are actively exploring ways to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency across our school buildings and operations.
  • Climate Resilience: We are taking action to reduce the risks of flooding and overheating, while also future-proofing our resources to prepare for potential shortages.
  • Biodiversity and Habits for Nature: We are fostering habits and adopting practices that enhance species diversity both on our school grounds and in the wider environment.
  • Education for a Sustainable Future: Our curriculum is designed to provide knowledge-rich and comprehensive teaching about climate change, empowering students with the understanding and skills they need to make a difference.

Together, we are building a culture of sustainability that will benefit our students, our community, and the planet.

Our Green Team and Climate Action

At Woodbury Salterton CofE Primary School, we are proud to have a dedicated Green Team made up of enthusiastic pupils who meet regularly with staff and members of the wider community. Together, they work towards delivering our Climate Action Plan, leading projects that make a real impact on our school and beyond.

The Green Team plays a vital role in shaping our sustainability journey. They help plan and lead initiatives that support biodiversity, reduce carbon emissions, and promote energy efficiency. Their work is rooted in our shared commitment to protecting the environment and preparing for a more sustainable future.

They have developed a set of climate aims that guide their actions and inspire others:

  • “We want to look after nature and our homes.”
  • “We want to help the world to make it nice and a better place so we are all safe.”
  • “We want to improve homes and habits for wildlife.”
  • “We want to improve the school grounds to increase habitats and improve conditions.”
  • “We will encourage others to look after the world.”
  • “We will educate and tell others the importance of looking after our world.”

These aims reflect the values of our pupils and the heart of our climate education. Through hands-on projects, thoughtful planning, and inclusive learning, we are empowering our students to be changemakers for a greener future.

Saplings and acorns had another great session in our Forest school field.  We are very excited about the outdoor classroom and firepit area that is currently being built which will allow us to take our learning outside on a more regular basis.  Through the nature park project, Saplings class have started mapping the habitats on our forest school site as one of the first steps to make a difference to our space. From here, we can decide what kinds of improvements we'd like to make - such as letting some grass grow long, creating a vegetable patch, planting flowering grassland plants or installing a pond or rain garden.

The Green Team have been very busy this half term engaging in  a Nature Park Project where they have investigated and mapped the habitats in our school playground. They discovered that we need more vertical habitats and some water environments as well as planting more plants to increase the biodiversity within our school grounds. As a result, the children have organised a cake sale after school to raise money to buy the resources they need to complete their project.  Well done Green Team - watch this space for our next fundraising event which will get everybody out in the natural environment!
They have also been helping the environment by completing litter picks.
